Official Conference Tours

An on-site tour operator will be based at the information desk and bookings can be made a day before the event or activity. The following tours have been arranged for delegates and accompanying persons.

An evening tour of Soweto

No other city lays bare the history of South Africa like Soweto does. On this special evening tour we will be reminded of South Africa's apartheid past on our trip through this very well known township. We will look at housing from the early 1900s to the present; visit an original mine compound; briefly visit the legendary Baragwanath taxi ranks and markets; and meet the people of Soweto and the informal settlements of Motswaledi or Kliptown.

In the suburb of Orlando we will view the apartheid-built homes of famous activists including Bishop Desmond Tutu and former President Nelson Mandela, whose home has been turned into a museum.

The last stop is the Hector Petersen Memorial Square and Museum, established to honour the memory of all those involved in the Soweto Uprising on 16 June 1976. The museum is named after 13-year old Hector Peterson, one of the first students to die under police fire on that tragic and historic day. The museum's vivid displays are a fitting tribute to the role of youth in the struggle against apartheid.

The Lesedi Cultural Village

This village is Gauteng's most exciting showcase of African culture where four African villages have been recreated in their original and historical context. We will be introduced to the art, dancing, history and tribal legends of Africa. This tour also includes dinner at the famous Njama Tjoma African restaurant.

The Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve

This nature reserve lies on the outskirts of Johannesburg. Here visitors can view a variety of African wildlife including Buffalo, Rhino, Lion, Cheetah, Wild Dog, Zebra and Wildebeest.

Accompanying Persons

There will be an on-site tour operator at the Information Desk to assist accompanying persons wishing to obtain more information about what's on in Gauteng during their stay.
